Are you a person who daily reads a book or your reading habit just centers around insta posts, facebook feed, tweets or bill boards.
If you are not a daily book reader like thousands of others, then you are surely missing one of the best gift in the world like them. The pleasure of reading books not only lies in its stories but also in its smell, the turning of the pages, having a bundle of books in your rack, excitement of getting a new book and so on.
"A book is a gift you can open again and again."
-Garrison Keillor
The benefits of reading books and its positive effects on a person has been studied by innumerous scientists, psychologists, doctors, researchers and teachers. They have studied in their own fields and found out a notable difference between a person who reads book on a regular basis and who doesn't.
The benefits of reading books can't be taken lightly. In a long-term you will easily see the results of it. Here I have shared some of them to make you understand what you gain by just reading a few pages daily.
- Benefits of Reading Books:
Many people think that reading books just revolves around mere pleasure and enjoyment in life, but studies shows that it has a lot of physical, mental and social benefits too.
They are :
1. Increase in Knowledge
Everytime you read a book, you will learn something new, whether it's just a word or a whole bunch of knowledge. The more you read the more you'll be able to learn and fight with the challenges of life. And you must remember that you can lose your wealth, job, home and everything but the knowledge you have can't be taken by anyone.
"Reading is essential for those who seek to rise above the ordinary."
-Jim Rohn
2. Expand your vocabulary
Researchers have found that students who read books regularly, beginning at a young age, gradually develop large vocabularies. And vocabulary size can influence many areas of your life from college to job opportunities and so on. When you read daily, your vocabulary will improve on a regular basis and this will help you in connecting with people with self-confidence and beliefs.
By reading books you can even learn a new language, as non native writers use their language in writings.
3. Boost your Mental Health
Reading book daily not only makes you smarter but it will also help in stimulating your mental health. As you give so much importance to your physical health, you need to take care of your mental health the same way too. Because reading is an exercise of brain.
According to research published in Neurology, there will be a decline in memory and brain functions with increasing age. But regular reading may help in slowing that process and keeps your mind sharper for a longer period. Frequent brain exrecise can be helpful in lowering the mental decline by 32%, stated by The Huffington Post.
"Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body."
-Richard Steele
4. Increases the empathize ability
Reading fiction often relates us to its characters, their scenerio and problems which helps us in having a better understanding of the complex human relationships, its emotion, feelings and social life and gives us the ability to cope with it in a better way.
Studies suggest that this feeling can't be developed by just reading once, but a long-term impact of reading fiction stories can be easily felt.
5. Works as a Stress-buster
No matter how much stressed, tired you feel, if you read any book, then that reading will definitely reduce your stress to the minimal. Studies have also proved that 30 minutes of book reading a day can reduce your stress level, gives you mental peace and makes you feel relaxed and happier.
6. Travel without moving your feet
Almost everyone has a desire or I can say dream to travel the world, witness the beauty and diversity of the world. Books gives you the chance to fulfill this dream. Even books can take you to such places where you can't even think of it's existence without moving your feet at all. Sometimes you just have to pick up a book and enters into the world of writer's imagination and you will surely feel every small details of the place and a clearer picture of that place will comes in your mind.
"The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go."
-Dr. Seuss
7. Sharpens your Brain
Reading helps in stimulating your brain muscles because you have to remember a lot of things at a time like the characters, their nature and appearance, the plots, dialogues, history and much more. This will help you in other areas of your life also. Your brain is a complex yet interesting part of the body. Everytime you read something new it will create pathways in your brain and will store in it for minimum of a month or less if you don't use it even once, and at the same time strengthen the older one's.
8. Gives you peaceful sleep
Reading for just five minutes or more before going to sleep helps you in getting proper sleep. It has to be in your routine. But the book you read must be in printed form. Reading books on screen infact makes it difficult for you to sleep. The light from the screen is harmful for you and makes you awake for a longer time which even lead to many health problems in your life.
9. Can make you feel the beauty of smallest of things
The writer explains all the small details of the place, its atmosphere, surrounding and so on with such an intensity that the one who reads it with concentration can easily feel those things and even find themself at that place.
That's the beauty of reading. You can feel the raindrops even in the full glory of Sun, you just have to feel it. This will develop the ability of seeing beauty in every aspects of life and search for happiness in everything.
10. Enhance your concentration and focus abilities
In a multi-tasking world it is difficult to maintain your attention on just one thing at a time. But when you pick up a book and read every line with utmost concentration and focus to absorb the slightest of details, you won't really care about what's happening around you. Reading can even separate you from a large, noisy atmosphere if your concentration level is high. This helps you in your life in focusing at various things where for others it will be difficult.
11. Improves your writing skills
Reading and writing go hands in hands. As it is said, "If you're not a good listener then you won't be a good speaker". Like the same way if you want to write then you have to read too. Reading helps you in understanding how to write properly, in the best possible way. Writers before writing a topic undergo a deep study of it so that they can write it in the most proper and remarkable way. It also gives you the understanding of various aspects and situations of life and gives you the best idea of writing it, thus improving your reading as well as writing skills.
# Are you reading in a right way?
There is an unending list of benefits of reading books, but the point lies in, whether you are reading in the right way or not, i.e., paper book or e-book. Reading books on screen can trap you in many problems and can overshadow the benefits of reading printed books. But if you can't get any books to read in print form then you can continue reading e-books until you find a paper book because we all have heard that "something is better than nothing". Reading online is better in place of reading nothing but you don't have to solemnly depend on e-books, articles or blog. Atleast try to read a printed book once a week.
"A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies.. The man who never reads lives only one."
-George R. R. Martin
Apart from the long-mentioned benefits of reading, there are several other benefits which can only be realised or felt by reading a book like the characters with whom you can relate, the books in which you will be living even after finishing it. You can carry the goodness of every book you read with yourself, it will be shown in your every action, words and expressions. The book will always be with you whether in your heart or mind, actions or words, thoughts or emotions, knowingly or unknowingly, you will forever carry out the best of books with you.
- Poem on Reading Books
Tried my hands on something new, hope you will like it.
Band padi kisi kitaab mein ek khula aasmaan rehta hai,
Chahat to kar kabhi udne ki, tu khol kar usko padhne ki
Kuch nayi baat hi padh lena,
Kuch andekhe raston pe chal lena,
Dekha na ho na kabhi suna ho,
Ek nayi si duniya bhi ghoom lena,
Kagaz ke kisi kone mein ek dost bhi kya pata mil jaaye,
Jisse kabhi na ho milna par seekh bahot si mil jaaye,
Kya pata kore se kisi kagaz mein,
Lafzon ke kisi aangan mein,
Panne ki kisi lakeeron mein,
Kisi baaton ke saleekon mein,
Woh baat tumhein mil jaaye, tumhara saath hi mil jaaye,
Kya pata kisi kisson mein, tumhara koi hissa hi mil jaaye,
Kabhi khud se mulaqaat ho jaaye,
Kabhi khud se baat ho jaaye,
Kya pata jis jawaab ki tumhein talaash ho,
Kisi sawaal mein hi woh baat mil jaaye,
Puraani si kisi kitaab mein, yeh baat bhi tumhein mil jaaye,
Ek naya sa aasmaan dikh jaaye, ek naya nazariya mil jaaye,
Ek band kitaab ki duniya mein,
Ek khula aasmaan mil jaayega,
Tu koshish to kar udne ki,
Tu koshish to kar padhne ki,
Ek band kitaab ki duniya mein, ek khula aasmaan mil jaayega,
Tu koshish to kar udne ki, tu koshish to kar padhne ki.
Chahat to kar kabhi udne ki, tu khol kar usko padhne ki
Kuch nayi baat hi padh lena,
Kuch andekhe raston pe chal lena,
Dekha na ho na kabhi suna ho,
Ek nayi si duniya bhi ghoom lena,
Kagaz ke kisi kone mein ek dost bhi kya pata mil jaaye,
Jisse kabhi na ho milna par seekh bahot si mil jaaye,
Kya pata kore se kisi kagaz mein,
Lafzon ke kisi aangan mein,
Panne ki kisi lakeeron mein,
Kisi baaton ke saleekon mein,
Woh baat tumhein mil jaaye, tumhara saath hi mil jaaye,
Kya pata kisi kisson mein, tumhara koi hissa hi mil jaaye,
Kabhi khud se mulaqaat ho jaaye,
Kabhi khud se baat ho jaaye,
Kya pata jis jawaab ki tumhein talaash ho,
Kisi sawaal mein hi woh baat mil jaaye,
Puraani si kisi kitaab mein, yeh baat bhi tumhein mil jaaye,
Ek naya sa aasmaan dikh jaaye, ek naya nazariya mil jaaye,
Ek band kitaab ki duniya mein,
Ek khula aasmaan mil jaayega,
Tu koshish to kar udne ki,
Tu koshish to kar padhne ki,
Ek band kitaab ki duniya mein, ek khula aasmaan mil jaayega,
Tu koshish to kar udne ki, tu koshish to kar padhne ki.
Can't mention the vast benefits of reading in this short poem but I gave my best. Do tell me in the comment section below how's it. And also tell me which was the last book you read and whether it was a paper book or e-book.
